Eastbound Marine Stack Trains

Hopefully by using the following chart you will be able to determine where the train originated and where it is headed. All marine stack train symbols start with the letter S. Marine stack trains are not on a very tight schedule, so they can run at almost anytime on any day of the week. Watch for the power configuration and the major steam ship line containers on the train. In the lines below, I have put the most frequent trains at the top. The number 18/20 means that it was operated 18 times during a 20 day period, so it is almost daily. The number 1/20 means that it only operated once during the same 20 day period. Next will be the power configuration. Trains with distributed power (DPU) have a plus sign such as 4+2 mean four units on the headend and two on the rear, while 3 units means all the power was on the front and no DPU. Following the power will be another frequency number indicating how often that power configuration was used: 1x means once, 2x means twice, etc.

The SOIGPEA operated twice during this period but was not observed. From earlier encounters with this train (2012) it had a mix of all major steam ship line containers plus Matson. The two trains during this period had 4 units each. If you see Matson marine containers (not the 53ft Matson container) mixed with domestic contains, then it is a Q train, not an S train. S trains are exclusively marine containers. The only exception is autoracks on the rear and this occurred only once on the eastbound SLBEALT.
