Powder River Basin Coal

My first trip to the mining area of the Powder River Basin was in 1992. I was doing more video taping than photography at the time, so I don't have a large collection of trains in that area. I made another trip to the area in 2000 doing more video taping. As busy as the line is there is very little variety in the coal trains. Some trains use rotary dump gondolas, some use air dump hoppers. For many of the coal trains you can figure out the destination of the coal by the reporting marks on the cars. There is more information in my 2008 coal book (look at the bottom of the page for Western Coal). The following pages are pictures from the 1992 trip.
