William Hood was the railroad engineer that laid out the course of the railroad over the Tehachapi Mountains. By a stroke of genius, he was able to loop the track over itself to help gain elevation in the climb toward the summit. Thus was formed the famous Tehachapi Loop. Engines 8551, 7516, 9020, and 8527 lead a westbound Southern Pacific train around the Tehachapi Loop on June 8, 1987. Disk 44
