I caught KCS train 53 earlier in the day (March 7, 1987) as it backed its train out of the Dallas Joint Yard and then went by Tower 19. Train 53 picked up more cars at the Santa Fe Dallas Yard. KCS engines 798, 4076 (a slug - power comes from the adjoining units), 793, and 753 pull their train through Zacha Junction at a leisurely 10 miles an hour.
Bringing up the rear of train 53 is KCS caboose number 358. The train is headed to Greenville, TX for a crew change.
The Santa Fe built a 49 mile line between Dalton Jct. (near Denton on its Oklahoma City to Temple main line) and Zacha Jct. The line cost $7,000,000 and was completed in December 1955. Prior to this freight to and from Dallas had to go through Cleburne. This put the Santa Fe at a major disadvantage with the other railroads serving Dallas. The line and the yard at Zacha was sold to the KCS around 1995. KCS then picked up trackage rights into the new Alliance terminal as part of the BNSF merger. Disk 95
