The canyon opens up near Hackberry and the railroad crosses a normally dry stream bed. Steam locomotives used to take on oil and water here. The Santa Fe completed double track between Hackberry and Louise (two miles north of Kingman) in 1922. Hackberry is at milepost 489. On November 1, 1977 train 881 heads east into the canyon. Train 881 began in 1975 and handled hot piggyback and UPS traffic for Chicago. It was scheduled out of Los Angeles at 4:00AM. Disk 73
