The Santa Fe gained trackage rights over the Southern Pacific from Mojave to Bakersfield (Kern Junction) in 1899. To help control traffic moving on and off the SP, the Santa Fe built Kern Junction Tower in January 1900 and the interlocking signal system was completed in April. On May 30, 1978 the engineer on TOFC train 991 has just snagged his set of trainorders at Kern Junction Tower. The trainorders for the conductor and rear brakeman are on the lower delivery fork. Extra 5026 East is leaving Santa Fe rails for the climb over the Tehachapi Mountains on SP rails. The elevation here is 400 feet. Disk 40 |
