Norfolk Western engines on ATSF train at Tunnel 2 in the Tehachapi Mountains

Norfolk Western engines on ATSF train at Tunnel 2 in the Tehachapi Mountains

The nice thing about Tunnel 2 is you can drive right up to the top of the hill over the tunnel. On July 9, 1979 a Santa Fe eastbound rumbles upgrade with engines 8744, NW1636, 6025, and 1755. If I remember correctly, the Norfolk Western was shut down due to a strike at the time and the Santa Fe Railway leased a bunch of their engines.

This is the rear of the same train as it snakes its way up the many curves at the old siding of Allard. This siding was later joined with the siding at Bealville and the name Allard was dropped from the timetable. Bealville is the longest siding on Tehachapi at 13,270 feet. Disk 41
