Train EUWCY (Extra 8803 East) comes to a stop at Summit to cut out the helper power on November 7, 1977. The elevation at Summit is 4,028 feet.
Right on the heals of the eastbound SP train was a Santa Fe train lead by engine 8799. The new freeway bridges over the tracks right at the Tehachapi summit. The elevation at that point is 4,023 feet. The SP engines are sitting what once was the west leg of the wye at Summit for turning helpers. The last time I remember seeing it being used was in 1967. I think the wye was torn out not long after these pictures were taken. Disk 47
