Train 968 (Extra 5595 East) enters the top end of Mojave on November 21, 1977. In one mile the train will shift off of SP trackage and will be back on Santa Fe trackage for the run east to Barstow. The elevation here is 2,790 feet.
Right after the Santa Fe train went by, the Mojave Flyer (Extra 9331 East) slows and enters the yard. From 1884 to 1889 borax was a major part of Mojave's history. The famous 20-Mule Team Wagons hauled borax from the mines in Death Valley to the railroad in Mojave. A monument on Sierra Highway in front of the Kentucky Fried Chicken honors the spot where the wagons were unloaded. Disk 48
