Gallery of steam engine pictures on the Crab Orchard and Egyptian Railroad in Illinois

The CO&E began operating 10 miles of a former Illinois Central branch line out of Carbondale in 1971. At one time the branch ran 77 miles from Carbondale to Rosiclare. CO&E engine 17 was built in Canada and served on the Roberval & Saguenay Railway in Quebec. The CO&E acquired the engine in 1975. After overhaul the engine served the railroad until September 8, 1986 when a steam pipe inside the boiler broke. The engine is now on display at the Boone and Scenic Valley Railroad in Boone, Iowa.
