Conrail engines 3398 and 7779 are passing the tower at Porter, IN on June 1, 1983. Notice that there are train orders in the delivery forks just ahead of the engines. I think this is train symbol PIBN. The train came from the large Conway classification yard in Pittsburgh and is headed west toward BNs yard at Cicero.
Train 353 (The Lake Cities) approaches the interlocking tower at Porter later in the afternoon. The Michigan Central used to go straight across, where the Chevy Caprice station wagon is sitting, and crossed the NYC. I think this line was built around 1852. In 1958, the NYC planned to install CTC between Jackson, MI and Porter, IN 165 miles and remove most of the second track except what would be used as passing sidings. The CTC would also eliminate 10 interlockings. The CTC machine would be in Jackson. Disk 114
