Santa Fe Unit Grain Train at Winfield, KS Santa Fe Unit Grain Train at Winfield, KS

The grain train we were chasing south from Augusta on February 24, 1974 is moving through the bridge over the Walnut River and now engine 3540 is crossing a Frisco Railroad branch. This branch line has since been abandoned. Steve took the top picture and I took the lower one just a second later. My picture is on disk 83.

The AT&SF completed the installation of block signals on 26 miles of double track between Winfield, KS and Newkirk, OK in 1919. It added 28 US&S semaphore signals Mulvane, KS to Winfield 23 miles in 1928. The SLSF converted the interlocking at the crossing of the ATSF in Winfield to automatic in 1937.

The grain train's slow speed allowed us to continue the chase and Steve got another picture as the train was north of Hackney.
