This North Platte to Hinkle general freight (train symbol NPHK) is the first train on the Eastern Oregon video. It had 37 loads, 46 empties at 6,028 tons. Up front were engines 9387 (C40-8W) and 6056 (SD60). On the rear were DPU (Distributed Power Units) 9398 and 9389 (both C40-8Ws). The train was slowing for a meet with the HKNPP (Hinkle to North Platte Perishable). The date was May 25, 1996. The double track between Kamela and Meacham had been extended down the canyon, see SENP2 in our UP day in 1987 taken in this same area. You can also see the change in motive power from mostly EMD SD40s in 1987 to many GE C40-8s in 1996. Despite all these changes, freight train schedules have remained basically the same.
