Burlington Northern (old CB&Q) Line Trains
in Montana and northern Wyoming Picture Gallery
This gallery covers the Burlington Northern Line from Huntley, MT to Sheridan, WY,
Edgemont, SD and Crawford, NE. The line was built by the Burlington and Missouri River Railroad. It reached Gillette in 1891, Sheridan in 1892, and finally connected with the Northern Pacific at Huntley in 1893.
The line used to see four or five freight trains a day during the 60s and early 70s. Then came the boom in Powder River coal. The line was transformed from single track dark territory to CTC equipped single and double track in the 80s as coal traffic surged.
