We chased train RVNPY (Extra 8969 East) and caught it again at Rye Patch.

The SP installed double track from just west of Lovelock to Rose Creek (ten miles west of Winnemucca) around 1925 to speed up operation on this long grade. The railroad climbs from Lovelock at 3,980 feet to 4,290 feet at Rose Creek. There is a siding between the two tracks at Rye Patch. Just beyond Rye Patch the tracks part company for a ways. You can see the westbound track in the first picture to the right. Train OAMFT kicks up the dust as it comes through Rye Patch on July 8, 1989. The train has engines 7449, 7358, 9338, 8330, and 7453 pulling 57 loads at 5,735 tons. Disk 28
