The first railroad to come through Giddings was the Houston & Texas Central in 1871 as it built west from Brenham toward Austin. The second railroad came through in 1889 when the San Antonio & Aransas Pass built north from Yoakum to Waco. Giddings had three different mileposts. It was at milepost 59 as measured from Hearne, milepost 67 as measured from Yoakum through Flatonia, and at milepost 56 on the Austin branch as measured from Hempstead. The segment from Brenham to Giddings was abandoned in 1977.
Engines 8731 and 6702 have just set out some cars for Austin at Giddings on May 10, 1978. The engines are backing toward their train parked south of town. Is that a VW Karmann Ghia I spy over by the depot.
The Karmann Ghia looks strangely out of place next the Giddings station. The Chevy pickup truck seems to fit Texas much better. With the train back together and air test completed, train symbol LAPBY heads off to Dime Box for a meet. Disk 100
