Dalhart sits on the border of Dallam and Hartley counties. The town of Dalhart was established when the Chicago, Rock Island and Pacific Railway building west from Liberal, KS to Santa Rosa, NM crossed the Fort Worth and Denver City line in 1901. When these photographs was taken, the Rock Island route had just been taken over by the Cotton Belt.
Extra 7942 West has just changed crews and will pick up some cars out of the yard before heading to Tucumcari. Engine 8954 is sitting on the interchange track with the FW&D at Dalhart on May 13, 1980. Below, Extra 7942 West is crossing the old FW&D mainline.
