MP engine 1570 is switching at the south end of the Dallas Joint Yard on April 4, 1987.
After a devasting flood in 1908, Dallas leaders worked out plan for levees to protect the city from the Trinity River. The levee system was completed in 1929. At Tower 19, the southern levee is on the north side of the Santa Fe track. A concrete wall goes around the tower. A gate can be inserted if the water gets really high. You can see the slot for the gate in the concrete wall to the right of engine 1570.
The Santa Fe's Dallas Branch crossed MKT's Hillsboro Subdivision at Tower 19. Also using the MKT trackage into Dallas from Endot (half mile south) was the MP and SP. The BN and CRI&P (until 1980) got on 30 miles further south at Waxahachie, so they had a longer journey on the Hillsboro Subdivision. The tower not only protected the crossing, but also controlled many of the switches at the south end of the joint right of way yard, interchange tracks with Santa Fe's Dallas Yard, and the junction at Endot.
MP engine 1570 is going by Tower 19 with transfer cars for SP's Miller Yard in southeast Dallas. Disk 94
