The Southern Pacific reached Valentine on February14, 1882. Valentine (milepost 668) had been a crew change point as it was about half way between Sanderson and ElPaso. As an interesting side note, there was a 5.8 magnitude earthquake in Valentine on August16, 1931. Fortunately there were no fatalities, but there was major damage to the adobe structures in town and the surrounding communities. This was the most powerful earthquake ever recorded in Texas.
