On September 17, 1987 train LAAP3 drops down the hill from Tooele to Lake Side with engines 3498, 3151, 3736, 3610 and MP6037. This train is on the Union Pacific Leamington Cut-off (completed in 1903) and will soon run parallel with the former Western Pacific from Garfield into Salt Lake City. Train LAAP3 was scheduled out of Los Angeles at 3:00PM on Wednesday and into Salt Lake City at 2:30PM the next day. It handled APL containers for Chicago and Kearny, NJ.
At the beginning of 1917, the Los Angeles & Salt Lake had automatic block signals on only 60 miles of single track of the 681 miles operated. It installed 197 Federal type 4A automatic block signals on the 117 miles of single track between Salt Lake City and Lynndyl in 1918. During 1942 the UP did extensive work replacing semaphore signals with US&S color light signals and Salt Lake city to Lynndyl got 197 signals. Disk 29
