For this series we begin south of Black River Junction. We will follow Union Pacific (exMilwaukee Road) trackage and former Northern Pacific trackage working our way south through Tacoma to Portland, OR.
In 1909 the NP installed a mechanical interlocker at Black River to control the junction of the Sumas Branch (through Renton and Woodinville) with the double track between Seattle and Tacoma and the crossing of the Milwaukee Road north of the junction. That same year it installed 56 Hall 3 position upper quadrant signals for 38 miles of double track between Seattle and Tacoma. This group of signals were the only ones not manufactured by GRS. All of the other signals added during this time frame were GRS Model-2A. NP completed the installation of 41 upper quadrant signals between Vancouver, WA and Kalama in February 1911 and added 89 signals Kalama to Tenino in 1912. In 1916 NP installed a 10 lever mechanical interlocker at the Steilacoom drawbridge.
The NP installed CTC between Vancouver, OR and Castle Rock in 1967 and extended it to Centralia in 1969 and to Wabash (2 miles north of Centralia) in 1970. Due to clearance problems inside the Ruston and Nelson Bennett tunnels, the BN added crossovers and a short section of CTC in this short 1.8 mile stretch in 1984. This allowed eastbound trains to cross over and use the west track through the tunnels. This short stretch was converted to single track in 1988 at the same time CTC was added between Wabash and Tacoma.
All pictures in this series are on disks 8, 9, and 10. You can purchase a disk and printout any of the pictures for your own use to dress up your train room or add color to a house that just cries out for more train pictures.
