Powder River Basin in Wyoming Train Picture Gallery

The country's newest main line was built in stages from 1972 to 1979 to reach the coal deposits in the Powder River Basin. The first segment was from Donkey Creek at the north end to the Belle Ayr mine. By the end of 1975 the line had reached Coal Creek 26 miles south of Donkey Creek. a year later, the BN completed a branch from just west of Donkey Creek to Eagle Butte to serve mines northeast of Gillette. The Orin Line was finally completed in October 1979. Competition came to the PRB when the C&NW completed a line from Joyce, NE to connect with its Cowboy Line at Crandall, WY in 1984.
