There is something about the excitement of seeing an approaching train off in the distance. It is hard to describe, but it is exhilarating when you have driven about 800 miles in pouring rain, then have a beautiful clear day. You hear a train blow for a crossing about two miles away, you see the train sweeping around a broad curve, and now you see the headlight.
At Granger, the Oregon Short Line splits off of the Overland Route and heads northwest to Portland. The elevation here is 6,270 feet. Train NPP (Extra 60 West) heads toward Pocatello on September 9, 1976. Train NPP (North Platte Pocatello) has an interesting mix of power: a DDA35, SD45, GP30, and a GP30B. On the rear of the train is a large block of empty mechanical reefers. Disk 75
